Algerian football has produced rare talents: playmakers capable of dictating the tempo, high-scoring forwards, and solid defensive stalwarts who have carried the Fennecs in major international tournaments.

This ranking brings together the ten best Algerian players of all time.

💡 How did we determine our top 10 Algerian players?

The ranking is based on a combination of criteria: peak performance level, consistency over several seasons, club impact (major leagues, European/continental competitions), national team impact, and individual accolades (CAF, league awards, tournament trophies).

Statistical data (matches, goals, assists) primarily comes from popular reference databases (notably Transfermarkt). For some players from the 1970s–1980s, data for assists or even certain club totals may be incomplete (a common limitation of statistical databases for less-covered leagues).

10) Raïs M'Bolhi

Rais M'Bolhi

With 108 clean sheets in 336 career matches, M'Bolhi has established himself as a modern benchmark in goal for the Fennecs. He notably won the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations with Algeria, finishing as the best goalkeeper of the tournament.

9) Faouzi Ghoulam

Ghoulam contre l'Allemagne

A modern full-back ahead of his time, Ghoulam is one of the best Algerian players in history, thanks in part to his longevity at the highest European level. He is credited with 41 clean sheets in 160 Serie A matches, where he also won the 2014 Coppa Italia with Napoli.

8) Salah Assad

Salah Assad

Assad embodies the generation that gave Algeria continental prestige. With 15 goals in 68 caps for the Fennecs, he was an intense, direct, and decisive forward.

7) Yacine Brahimi

Brahimi

Brahimi was one of the most electric Algerian players on the field. Short dribbles, changes of pace, directional control, he had the ability to turn a game on a single action. Winner of the 2019 AFCON with Algeria, he also made his mark at FC Porto, where he won the Liga NOS in the same year. Brahimi has an impressive total of 158 career goals.

6) Ismaël Bennacer

Bennacer à l'OM

Bennacer is part of the generation that won the 2019 AFCON with Algeria. He was also named the tournament's best player. At club level, he achieved the remarkable feat of becoming Serie A champion with AC Milan in 2022.

5) Islam Slimani

Slimani is, to date, the top Algerian goalscorer in history with 46 goals in 105 caps. Winner of the 2019 AFCON, the 1.88-meter forward has nonetheless struggled to establish himself long-term with his clubs. Only winning the Portuguese Cup with Sporting in 2015, Slimani has played for 16 professional clubs in his career!

4) Mustapha Dahleb

Dahleb is an Algerian football icon who made his mark in the 70s. For many, he was the first great star of Paris Saint-Germain, scoring a total of 98 goals in 309 matches with the capital club.

To further highlight the importance this player had at PSG, we can quote this magnificent phrase from Fabrice Borelli: "They say that when Dahleb wasn't playing at the Parc, the Eiffel Tower would lean in sorrow."

3) Lakhdar Belloumi

Belloumi

While some club stats from the North African leagues of the 70s/80s are less centralized, Belloumi's status as an African football legend is firmly established by his accolades and international impact. He was notably awarded the title of African Footballer of the Year in 1981.

2) Rabah Madjer

Madjer

Madjer is the first Algerian player to have won a Champions League (with Porto in 1987). He scored a legendary goal in the final against Bayern Munich. It was at the Portuguese club that he forged his legend, scoring 71 goals in 138 matches and winning the national championship three times.

For the sheer beauty of the gesture, here might be the most beautiful goal scored by an Algerian player in football history:

1) Riyad Mahrez

Mahrez ticks all the boxes: pure talent (technique, first touch, inside/outside play), decisive actions in the final third, and above all, a rare ability to perform at the highest level over several seasons. With an impressive statistic of 659 career matches and 197 goals scored, Mahrez is not only the greatest Algerian player in history but also one of the greatest African talents of all time. He was notably awarded the title of African Footballer of the Year 2016. He was also a key player for Leicester FC in 2016 when the underdog won the Premier League. He then moved to Manchester City, where he won the league four times and the Champions League in 2023.
