Moroccan football has always managed to produce exceptional, not to say "extremely rare," talents. This idea is particularly evident in the national team's historical milestones: the first continental title in 1976, followed by the 2022 World Cup epic (the first African nation to reach the semi-finals), which changed the international perception of Morocco.
💡 How did we determine our top 10 Moroccan players?
The ranking is based on a combination of criteria: peak performance level, consistency over several seasons, impact in club/national team, and individual accolades.
Statistical data primarily comes from publicly available reference databases (notably Transfermarkt).
10. Salaheddine Bassir

Bassir boasts an impressive record of 27 goals in 59 caps for Morocco. His signature match dates back to 1998: two goals against Scotland in a 3-0 Moroccan victory, showcasing his blend of positioning and composure as a pure finisher.
He remains one of the most prolific offensive players in recent Moroccan history, leaving a true mark on the tournaments of the late 1990s.
9. Medhi Benatia

Benatia is a renowned defender, but above all, a figure who has experienced elite club dressing rooms. For the national team, he has a total of 66 appearances and notably wore the captain's armband during periods when Morocco sought to establish a competitive identity.
In terms of club career, his CV is impressive: 2 German league titles with Bayern Munich and 3 Italian league titles with Juventus FC, along with several national cups.
8. Yassine Bounou

Bounou was one of those goalkeepers who change the tone of a team. For the national team, he has 87 caps.
For the rest of his career, he notably won the Zamora Trophy in 2021–2022 (an award given to the best goalkeeper in La Liga for the season), followed by a historic triumph in the UEFA Europa League in 2023 where he saved two penalties in the shootout with Sevilla FC.
7. Hakim Ziyech

Hakim Ziyech's statistics with the Moroccan national team speak for themselves: 64 caps and 25 goals. His impact was strongly felt during the 2022 World Cup. Morocco's historic journey in that tournament was partly due to his magical left foot.
On the club side, Ziyech's trophy cabinet has one line that changes everything: winner of the 2020–2021 Champions League with Chelsea FC. He is one of only four Moroccan players to have lifted this mythical trophy.
6. Noureddine Naybet

Naybet was a defensive stalwart with an evident understanding of the game and impressive international longevity. With 115 caps, he is the most capped Moroccan player in history.
At club level, he became one of the most recognizable Moroccan faces in Spain. He notably helped Deportivo La Coruña win the only La Liga title in their history in 1999/2000.
5. Badou Zaki

Zaki is one of the most remarkable African goalkeepers of his era. He was also voted "African Player of the Year" in 1986, which is extremely rare for a goalkeeper (this has only happened 3 times in history).
In Spain, Zaki contributed to Mallorca's promotion in 1988/89. He is still considered a reference in La Liga goalkeeping today.
4. Mohamed Timoumi

Timoumi received the African Ballon d'Or in 1985, embodying the figure of an old-school playmaker with a keen sense of the game and the ability to deliver the final pass.
Unlike the other Moroccan players in this ranking, Timoumi spent the majority of his club career in Africa. He notably won the 1985 African Champions Cup with AS FAR Rabat.
3. Mustapha Hadji

If one could describe Mustapha Hadji in one word, it would be this: effective. Not one dribble too many, Hadji had the art of transforming a mundane situation into a dangerous action for his team.
His place in Moroccan history is guaranteed by his trophy as African Player of the Year in 1998. For the national team, he accumulated 63 caps and 13 goals, with participation in two World Cups.
2. Ahmed Faras

Faras is a cornerstone of Morocco's history. He is the nation's first great icon, a player whose goals and leadership contributed to the national team's prestige. He was named African Player of the Year in 1975. He was also the captain who led Morocco to its first AFCON title in 1976.
1. Achraf Hakimi

What would Morocco, or PSG, be without Hakimi? Decisive on his right flank, the Moroccan full-back has been achieving success since the new decade. Historic semi-final at the 2022 World Cup with Morocco, and first Champions League title with Paris Saint-Germain, Hakimi is the most decorated player in Moroccan history.
With 93 caps, Hakimi is on track to break the record for most appearances with Morocco, ahead of a certain Noureddine Naybet...
